Urge Members of Congress to Support Lifesaving Research at the Dept. of Veterans Affairs
Dear [Lawmaker],
I am a strong supporter of the essential biomedical research that is conducted at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), which yields invaluable data to treat, cure, and prevent diseases affecting American veterans. I’m writing today to ask that you oppose current language in the FY25 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs appropriations bill to end animal testing at the VA by 2026. The Department of Veterans Affairs serves as a leading agency in maintaining the United States federal government’s role as the global leader in biomedical research. Researchers throughout the agency are working hard to deliver scientific and medical discoveries and provide people with new therapies for untreatable conditions. These health care advances are made possible by research with animals, which is governed by a strict structure of laws, regulations, and guidelines. Ending this research by 2026 would hinder ongoing healthcare advancements at the VA. Cancer therapies, immunizations, organ transplants, reconstructive surgeries, prosthetics, and many other medical innovations have been brought to fruition through research conducted at the Dept. of Veterans Affairs. Again, I ask that you please oppose the language in the FY25 MilCon-VA appropriations bill, so that researchers at the VA can maintain access to animal models, which play a vital role in the process of discovering new therapies to treat, cure, and prevent disease for our veterans.
Sincerely,
______
