Michigan: Legislation to Expand Gun Free Zones Still a Threat this Legislative Session
Dear Legislator,
As a resident of Michigan and a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, I urge you to please OPPOSE Senate Bill 857, Senate Bill 858, House Bill 4127, and House Bill 4128! SB 857 and SB 858 would prohibit law-abiding gun owners from carrying firearms in the State Capitol, House, and Senate office buildings, denying citizens of their Second Amendment rights. At the same time creating a loophole exempting state legislators from this prohibition. The bills would solidify a recent ban on firearms that was implemented by the Capitol Commission into law and would inhibit law-abiding gun owners from being able defend themselves. HB 4127 and HB 4128 would make it illegal for an individual to possess a firearm within 100 feet of a polling place, which includes ballot drop boxes and early voting sites. It would also be illegal to possess a firearm within 100 feet of any location ballots are being counted or processed. Law-abiding gun owners should not face criminal penalties for simply crossing arbitrary lines with no intent to disrupt or interfere with the voting process. Furthermore, many of these locations, like ballot drop boxes, are not well known and can be placed in areas where it would be otherwise legal to carry a firearm. This law would preventing you from accessing these areas while carrying and could create criminals, who unknowingly and unintentionally entered the area while engaging in their Second Amendment right. Please OPPOSE SB 857, SB 858, HB 4127, and HB 4128 to defend the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners in Michigan and to stop the increase expansion of gun free zones.
Sincerely,
______
