Illinois: Oppose Senate Bill 8 – Unreasonable Storage Mandates
Dear Governor Pritzker,
I urge you to veto Senate Bill 8, which was recently passed by the Illinois House and Senate. This legislation imposes overreaching and unnecessary firearm storage mandates on law-abiding citizens and increases civil penalties for non-compliance. SB 8 requires all firearms to be locked in a home, vehicle, building, or structure, regardless of circumstances. It expands current law by increasing the age requirement from 14 to 18 and includes “prohibited persons” and “at-risk individuals” under the storage requirement—potentially punishing responsible gun owners based on the actions of others. Additionally, SB 8 broadens the definition of firearms trafficking. The bill criminalizes transporting more than one "prohibited firearm" per legally eligible adult in a vehicle, creating legal jeopardy for those traveling into Illinois from neighboring states with stronger Second Amendment protections. This bill is a clear overreach that threatens the rights of responsible gun owners. I respectfully urge you to veto SB 8 and stand with law-abiding Illinoisans who value their Second Amendment rights.
Sincerely,
______
