Michigan: Take Action & Tell The House Committee to OPPOSE House Bills 6144, 6145, 6146, 6134, and 6135 Today!
Dear [Lawmaker],
Dear Committee Member, As a resident of Michigan and a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, I urge you to oppose HB 6144, 6145, 6146, 6134, and 6135 today. House Bills 6144, 6145, and 6146 require law enforcement agencies to destroy any firearm they confiscate or buyback. This is inconsistent with how they would handle any other legal item eligible for confiscation. It would place an undue financial burden on law enforcement agencies by making them pay to have the firearms destroyed. Instead, law enforcement should be able to continue to sell firearms to law-abiding citizens who meet all the criteria for owning a firearm and use the profits to fund law-enforcement activities. House Bill 6134 would remove the courts' discretion, requiring them to strip constitutional rights away from anyone with a personal protection order issued against them by ordering them to surrender their firearms, regardless of why the order was issued and regardless of whether the petitioner requested that firearms be surrendered. Under current state law, the court can determine if someone should surrender their firearms in this situation. House Bill 6135 mandates the surrender of firearms to law enforcement or an FFL for compliance with the recent expansion of misdemeanor prohibiting categories passed and signed into law last year. This mandate has the potential to create a fifth amendment violation against an individual's right against self-incrimination. Please OPPOSE these bills. Thank you for all that you do for our state.
Sincerely,
______
