Two exciting House bills, H.R. 2527 and H.R. 3541, have been introduced to help young children receive vision testing and services early in life. The bills direct funding to diagnose, treat, and serve children with vision loss. The goal is to address the disability as early as possible so children can be successful. The Early Detection of Vision Impairments for Children (EDVI) Act, H.R. 2527, will establish a national program for early detection and intervention. Services like this currently do not exist across the nation. The bill will provide grants for states and communities to fulfill this work. The bill, H.R. 2527, currently has bipartisan support.
The See the Board Act, H.R. 3541, introduced by Representative Lateefah Simon, who is congenitally blind, and Representative Jahana Hayes, will require the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to make grants available for nonprofits that provide free and mobile vision services for students in public schools.
