Urge Washington to Update Local Rules for Stations Now

Times have changed, and outdated bureaucratic rules should, too. Let’s ensure local radio and television stations can innovate, grow and compete. Take action today to ensure you continue to have access to free local news, emergency information, music and live sports on broadcasting.

Local radio and TV stations are at the heart of our communities, providing trusted emergency information, live sports and entertainment to millions of Americans. But their ability to serve listeners and viewers is at risk because of outdated rules that limit their growth and give the upper hand to Big Tech giants, like Meta, Google and Netflix.

The ownership rules that regulate local radio and television stations are frozen in time. These rules originated decades ago when radio, TV and newspapers were the primary ways Americans got news and information. Today, local stations compete with Big Tech companies for advertising and audiences, yet outdated rules still restrict how broadcasters can grow in their local markets. Meanwhile, companies like Meta, Google, Spotify and Apple face no comparable ownership restrictions.

Changing outdated broadcast rules will allow local stations to invest in new technologies, stay competitive and continue serving as trusted sources of information and live sporting events. Without changes to the rules, the things I love about my local radio and TV stations could go away, forcing me to rely only on expensive, complicated subscription services.

Please support modernizing local broadcast ownership rules as part of the FCC’s Quadrennial Review so they reflect today’s competitive media landscape. Strong local stations are essential to keeping communities informed, entertained and connected.
