Illinois: Oppose SB 8 Today!
Dear [Lawmaker],
As your constituent, I urge you to vote NO on Senate Bill 8, which recently passed out of the House Gun Violence Prevention Committee and is now eligible for a floor vote. SB 8 imposes sweeping firearm storage mandates that unfairly punish law-abiding gun owners. The bill would require all firearms in a home, vehicle, or other structure to be locked up — regardless of whether minors are present. It raises the age threshold from 14 to 18 and expands the restriction to include prohibited persons and so-called “at risk” individuals. This overreach could subject responsible gun owners to civil fines of up to $10,000 based on the unrelated actions of others. Additionally, SB 8 redefines firearms trafficking in a way that could unintentionally criminalize legal gun owners — particularly visitors from neighboring states with stronger Second Amendment protections — for possessing more than one “prohibited firearm” per adult in a vehicle. This legislation targets the rights of responsible citizens without doing anything to deter criminal behavior. I respectfully ask you to vote NO on SB 8 and protect the rights of Illinois firearm owners.
Sincerely,
______
