Michigan: Tell Governor Whitmer to VETO these Anti-Gun Bills Today!
Dear [Lawmaker],
As a fellow resident of Michigan and strong supporter of the Second Amendment, I urge you to VETO House Bills 5450, 5451, 6144, 6145, 6146 today! HB 5450 and HB 5451 would mandate that public schools annually post and distribute information regarding the state’s new safe storage law to the parent or legal guardian of any student actively enrolled in a Michigan public school. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services would develop this information, and public schools would be required to distribute the information annually starting in 2025. This legislation creates several inconsistencies with how we notify the public of changes in the law and deal with issues of child health and safety. It can also be used as propaganda to intimidate students and law-abiding gun owners who have school-age children. House Bills 6144, 6145, and 6146 would require law enforcement agencies to destroy any firearm that has been confiscated or returned during a "gun buy-back" with very little exception. Many local law enforcement agencies use the revenue generated from the sale of these firearms, and other confiscated items, to update their arsenals and to provide other equipment they may need. This bill creates inconsistency when it comes to how law enforcement handles firearms, mandating their destruction while other legal to-own items are allowed to be sold. This legislation, if signed by the Governor, bans the sale of those firearms depriving law enforcement of a vital funding source used to fund law enforcement activities. Again, I strongly urge you to VETO these bills today. Thank you for all that you do for our state.
Sincerely,
______
