As a constituent in your district, I would like to take the opportunity to discuss the impacts, challenges, and costs of the paid leave mandates with you. I am urging you to take a balanced approach that protects jobs, businesses, and our economy while supporting workers.

Most notably, I request that you to refine some of the notice and documentation provisions of the Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST) mandate to address employer workability concerns and pause the implementation of the Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) mandate so that businesses can be better prepared to manage and afford it.

Unfortunately, we are finding that the Earned Sick and Safe Time mandate is more costly than anticipated, and is causing unintended consequences for both employers and our employees.

With the recent announcement that the PFML payroll tax rate will be set at 0.88 percent in the first year to fund up to 20 weeks of paid leave each year for workers, I am very concerned about our ability to accommodate these costs and extended leave requirements. Furthermore, a number of questions remain unanswered about how businesses are supposed to comply with all of the complicated new requirements.

As you consider policies at the Capitol that impact businesses, please keep me in mind as a resource. I would love to offer my insights as you consider changes to these policies.
