Illinois: Oppose SB 8 Today!
Dear [Lawmaker],
I am writing to respectfully urge you to oppose Senate Bill 8, which is expected to come up for a vote in the Senate soon. This bill imposes overly broad and burdensome firearm storage requirements on law-abiding gun owners and threatens them with excessive civil fines. Current law already requires firearms to be stored safely and securely when minors under 14 are present. SB 8 drastically expands this requirement—raising the age threshold to 18, and including anyone deemed a “prohibited” or “at risk” individual. The bill also mandates locked storage not only in homes, but in vehicles, buildings, or any other structure, regardless of circumstances. This legislation could punish responsible gun owners for circumstances beyond their control and potentially strip them of their rights based on the actions of others. Civil penalties of up to $10,000 are not only excessive but create a chilling effect on the lawful ownership of firearms. I urge you to stand up for the rights of responsible gun owners in our state and vote NO on SB 8. Thank you for your time and service.
Sincerely,
______
