Oppose SB 2575
Dear [Lawmaker],
As a Hawaii resident and your constituent, I respectfully urge you to OPPOSE SB 2575. SB 2575 would elevate the penalty for possession, control, or transfer of a firearm or ammunition while subject to a Gun Violence Protective Order (GVPO) from a misdemeanor to a Class A felony, Hawaii’s most serious felony classification. This would result in a lifetime prohibition on firearm possession and impose a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years without parole. Individuals subject to a GVPO have not been convicted of a crime or adjudicated mentally ill. These orders are issued through a civil process based on third-party allegations, yet this legislation would impose severe criminal penalties without the full due process protections of the criminal justice system. Again, I respectfully urge you to OPPOSE SB 2575 in the House Committee on Judiciary and Hawaiian Affairs. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
______
