Maine: Mills Administration Finally Admits Push for Universal Background Checks
Dear [Lawmaker],
In the coming weeks, you will be voting on several gun related bills. One of these bills, LD 2224, is the Governor's gun control package. The governor has pitched this gun-control package as a "moderate" bill focused on Lewiston, however, as we've seen in recent weeks that is simply not true. Just this week, Commissioner Mike Sauschek admitted in a work session that the Governor's background check proposal is indeed Universal Background Checks, which Maine voters rejected in 2016. If passed, her background check scheme would require all transfers of firearms to occur through Federal Firearm Licensees, regardless of the relationship to the buyer or transferee. This is because failure to do so could result in a Class C felony, punishable by up to five years incarceration, for failure to run a background check, even on family members, friends, and neighbors. Beyond concerns of creating felons out of Mainers who are allowing a family member to borrow a hunting rifle, the concept of Universal Background Checks is fundamentally flawed, because, as found by the Obama Administrations Department of Justice, it is impossible to enforce without an illegal gun registry to track and follow every gun in Maine. The commission studying the Lewiston event unanimously found that the correct laws were in place and that the police should have yellow-flagged the shooter. Despite that fact, and the fact the Sen. Anne Carney has already said that these gun control bills are not focused on fixing the issues surrounding the Lewiston shooting, we are still seeing these failed cookie-cutter anti-gun bills from Michael Bloomberg be pushed in the halls of the State House. I urge you to vote NO on all anti-gun bills, just like Mainers in your district voted NO in 2016 to reject Universal Background Checks. Thank you for your attention to this matter and your service to our great state.
Sincerely,
______
