Ensure Jewish Representation on UofM Board of Regents

Ask Governor Walz to appoint Benjie Kaplan and/or Ellen Goldberg Luger to the University of Minnesota Board of Regents

Dear Governor Walz,

As a Minnesotan, I am writing to you today regarding the future of the University of Minnesota.

While progress continues to be made at the University of Minnesota in confronting campus antisemitism, we know there is still significant work to be done to ensure that the University is a welcoming environment for Jewish students, faculty, and staff at a time when antisemitic incidents targeting Jewish students have surged to their highest level since the ADL began tracking such incidents nationally.

As the Board of Regents and the UofM work to navigate this most difficult moment, experience, and representation matter more than ever.

For decades, there has been at least one Jewish member of the Board of Regents.

Fortunately, in the candidacies of Benjamin (Benjie) Kaplan and Ellen Goldberg Luger, you have an opportunity to continue that legacy by appointing one (or even two should you select both) of the most highly qualified applicants to the 5th Congressional District and/or at-large seats on the Board of Regents.

Both Benjie and Ellen are experienced, trusted leaders who are deeply involved in Minnesota’s Jewish community. Their voices, which are reflective of the mainstream views of Minnesota Jews, are crucial in ensuring that Jewish students, faculty, and staff are supported, valued, and understood at a time when Jews are facing unprecedented hostility.

As a strong supporter of Minnesota’s Jewish community, we trust that you will do the right thing. Please appoint Benjie and/or Ellen to the Board of Regents to ensure that the consensus perspective of Minnesota’s Jewish community will continue to have a seat when such representation matters more than ever.
