The Florida Senate is poised to pick up on an issue related to regulating vacation rentals. Senator Nick DiCeglie filed SB 280 to put necessary regulations and oversight in place to control unregulated short-term rental properties that are proliferating throughout Florida.

Ahead of the first meeting on the bill in the Senate Regulated Industries Committee, make your voice heard on why local control of short-term rentals is important to the security and integrity of your community!

Dear [Lawmaker],

Unregulated short-term rentals and illegal hotels are overrunning Florida’s neighborhoods. State lawmakers must strike the right balance and provide communities with the tools to combat bad actors. SB 280 is a great starting point. Please continue working on the legislation and AMEND SB 280 to appropriately regulate legal vacation rentals, deal with unlawful operators, and give localities the oversight tools they need to protect our neighborhoods.
 
This bill has several provisions that could enhance transparency and accountability, such as requiring the vacation rental platforms, like Airbnb, to register through a statewide vacation rental information system (VRIS). It will also require each property to have a unique identifier, which will make it easier for local governments to keep track of individual properties and deal with party houses and unlawful short-term rentals.
 
Because of our state’s popularity as a destination – for vacation, retirement and more – we have a mix of permanent residents in their forever homes alongside vacation houses owned by short-term rental operators. Unfortunately, some short-term rentals cause nuisance behavior in my community – whether it’s parties, crime, litter or other disturbances by guests – with little to no consequences or regulation in place to deter it.
