TELL CONGRESS: INFORMED PATIENTS ARE HEALTHIER PATIENTS
Dear [Lawmaker],
I am writing as your constituent to ask you to protect Americans' access to health information — a right that affects millions of people navigating complex medical decisions every day. Millions of Americans live with a chronic or complex health condition. For us, staying informed isn't a choice. It's essential to understanding our treatment and care options, advocating for ourselves in medical settings, and getting the care we need. An informed patient is a more empowered patient. Patients stay informed, in part, through access to health-related information in the everyday spaces where we live: a drug ad that introduces us to a treatment we didn't know existed, or a nutrition label that helps us make choices aligned with our health needs. I am concerned that the Administration is considering drug ad regulations that, in the name of transparency, would require so many disclosures in drug ads that the treatment information patients actually need will get lost – effectively silencing critical medical information. The people who would suffer most from these regulations are those who can least afford other avenues: patients without the time, money, or connections to seek answers on their own or have frequent doctor visits. The FDA already has a robust oversight system of drug ads that is working — mandating risk disclosures, monitoring promotional materials, and issuing warning letters when companies violate the rules. Piling on more regulation doesn't protect patients — it will silence medical information, leaving patients in the dark and shifting decision-making power away from individuals and their physicians and into the hands of bureaucrats and insurers who will never know their personal circumstances. I urge you to oppose policies that restrict access to health information and to protect the frameworks that keep patients informed and empowered in their own care. Thank you for your time and attention to this issue.
Sincerely,
______
