We Need Your Help: Call on Community Leaders to Use Federal Funding the Right Way!
Dear [Lawmaker],
I am concerned about how our tax dollars may be used for broadband in Cuyahoga Falls.
One plan under consideration is to have our community work with Summit County to build and operate an unnecessary, multi-million-dollar municipally-owned internet network. This is a costly and inefficient approach that will take years to build and put our tax dollars at risk - leaving the underlying problems unsolved. This project will also distract from bigger priorities that we still need to address, like teachers and education, roads, water systems, public safety, and other core government services.
Cuyahoga Falls deserves better.
We already have high-quality internet available and we can use these existing networks to connect local residents quickly.
• BroadbandNow reports that nearly 100% of Summit County residents have access to internet coverage today with speeds up to at least 100 Mbps.
• Eligible low-income families can now access this high-quality internet for FREE through the federal Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP).
I urge you and your colleagues to:
1. Use our federal American Rescue Plan funding on core critical infrastructure needs, like improving roads and bridges, ensuring safe drinking water for our children, and prioritizing community safety.
2. If you do invest in broadband, use the funding on programs that will actually close the digital divide, like providing computers to families in need and investing in digital literacy training programs for families and seniors.
We have a remarkable opportunity to ensure our community addresses its most pressing issues, once and for all. But it only works with the right solutions.
Thank you for your hard work and focus on these important issues.
Sincerely,
______
