Maine: Contact the Governor and Urge Her to Veto All Gun Control Bills!
Dear [Lawmaker],
I am writing to respectfully request that you veto LD 2238 (72-hour waiting periods), LD 2086 (disposition of firearms), and LD 2224 (expanded background checks). As a public servant with a long history of upholding Maine's outdoor sporting heritage, I am confident that you will make the right decision and veto these dangerous bills. LD 2238 seeks to implement a 72-hour waiting period on firearm purchases in Maine. This bill would decimate Maine's proud hunting tourism industry including reducing business for Maine guides, firearm sales for Maine firearm dealers, and would eliminate the ability for a Mainer to purchase a firearm for urgent self-defense. This type of gun-control from away has no place in Maine, which as you know, is the safest state in the nation. LD 2086 seeks to direct the State of Maine to destroy all forfeited firearms and changes the definition of "machine gun" to include semi-automatic weapons. First, redirected the state to destroy firearms instead of selling them harms the state's financial health on two fronts. It creates a cost of destroying these large quantities of firearms, and a loss of revenue from being unable to sell these firearms at auction. This harms the financial health of the state, and in no way reduces criminal activity. Additionally, the redefinition of "machine gun" to include semi-automatic weapons puts our state out-of-step with federal law. As mentioned in committee hearings, the state would be better served to match the federal definition of "machine gun" to ensure uniformity with the federal government and protect our state from costly legal challenges. LD 2224 expands background checks and requires advertised private sales to be conducted through an FFL, regardless of if the individual knows the buyer is not a prohibited person. Thank you for your past support of Mainer's Second Amendment rights. I hope that you continue that tradition by standing with law abiding gun owners and reject these gun control bills. Thank you for your attention to this matter and thank you for your service to our great state.
Sincerely,
______
