Tell New Mexico’s Next Governor to Make Education the Top Priority
For the 10th consecutive year, New Mexico ranks 50th in the nation in education. A decade of last place. Our students deserve better.
The 2026 KIDS COUNT Data Book shows that New Mexico not only remains last in education, but also received the nation’s lowest Education Index Score.
At the same time, a recent New Mexico Legislative Finance Committee report found that, at current rates of academic growth, the average New Mexico student will not reach grade-level proficiency in reading or math during their K-12 education.
Our students are bright, capable and full of potential. They deserve a public education system that gives them every opportunity to succeed.
As candidates seek to become New Mexico’s next governor, we call on them to make education their top priority by committing to policies that improve student outcomes.

- Ensure every student receives evidence-based reading and math instruction.
- Expand access to high-dosage tutoring and other interventions so students receive timely support before they fall further behind.
- Reduce chronic absenteeism by addressing barriers that keep students from getting to school consistently.
- Give families clear, easy-to-understand information about their child’s academic progress and the supports available to help them succeed.
- Recruit, develop and retain excellent teachers, principals and instructional leaders through strong coaching and professional development.
- Set measurable goals for improving literacy, math achievement and college and career readiness, and publicly report progress each year.
- Use data to drive decisions and invest in evidence-based strategies that improve student outcomes.
